DECREASING STITCHES

K2TOG OR P2 TOG = KNIT OR PURL TWO STITCHES TOGETHER

When you are knitting you sometimes need to 'shape' your work. For example when knitting one of our hats, like the Fala hat you have to create the shape of the crown to fit your head. Shaping means that sometimes you will need to decrease the number of stitches in a row. There are various techniques – we recommend the most basic work two stitches together method. Master this technique in our fab and easy Fala Pom pom Hat kit.

Look at our step by step photo instructions, or watch the video below for instructions on how to decrease a stitch.

STEP 1

Hold your right needle underneath the second stitch on the left hand needle, ready to knit.

STEP 2

Gently push your needle up through both stitches, and behind the left hand needle.

STEP 3

Wrap the yarn around the right hand needle, as you would a normal stitch.

STEP 4

Knit the two stitches together and pull them off the needle.

STEP 5

You’ve now knit two stitches together!

STEP 6

If you are doing a purl row and want to decrease, use the same method, just purl instead of knit.
