WE ARE HELS AND LOU
We didn’t like each other much when we met. Then we were forced to sit together, and changed our minds. Key friendship highlights: doing dreadful, awful, mind-numbing teenage summer jobs processing piles and piles of paper; having an awkward drink with Noel Fielding and his family whilst wearing eyepatches; getting stranded on the wrong side of a Greek island in only flip flops with a squashed sandwich.
BEING “GROWN UPS”
We both did Very Busy And Important Jobs. We were great at: helping kids and grown ups to make amazing changes in their lives. We liked: creating stuff to help our colleagues and customers. We wanted to: take all the things that we had learned in jobs we liked, and turn them into something we LOVED.
FUNKY, NOT FOGEY
Lou loves knitting. In her teens, her Mum taught her to knit. Lou likes making things for other people. She’s particularly proud of an 80s style jumper that she made when she was 17: it is hideous.* But she loves it, because she MADE it. Lou gave Helen a pattern to try.
*Due to totally foreseen circumstances, we don’t stock 80s-style hideous jumpers on our site. Yet.
NOT A KNIT WIZARD?
Helen didn’t love knitting. Her Mum did not teach her to knit in her teens. Hels took Lou’s pattern, and invented something she calls ‘upwards knitting’, which, basically, doesn’t exist. With a not-so-sleepy demanding wee bairn, she didn’t have the time to research and understand all these patterns out there. How was she going to make her blanket?! It was a knitmare.
DO. OR DO NOT. THERE IS NO ‘TRY’.
Lou looked at the tangled mess in front of her: was it just a ball of yarn, or was Hels inside it? She picked up the pattern that Hels was attempting, and gently explained it to her. It didn’t really matter if she made a few mistakes – because whatever she made, SHE’D made it! Suddenly, ‘upwards knitting’ was a thing of the past. Hels’ blanket magically started to appear…
WE ARE THE KNIT KIT CO.
And so, The Knit Kit Company was born, with a mission to spread the wisdom of knit wizardry to kingdoms far, and wide. No wondering anymore what “PSSO, K1, Yfwd” means (if you ever did), no need to find internet sages for stitch advice – just everything you need to create something lovely in one lovely bag.
TALKIN’ BOUT YOUR GENERATION
We made this company for you.
You could go and buy a hat from a high street shop, but why would you want to when everyone else has the same one? Go forth and knitiply! You know you want to.
When Lou had her very own bundle of joy a few years ago she decided it was time for some pure family time and left Helen to take The Knit Kit Co forward into the future. She's still there at the end of a FaceTime call to give encouraging words, share her thoughts on the Octonauts (her new favourite TV show) and show off her cookery on her new Instagram account!
