Once you’ve mastered the key first stitch, the knit stitch, it’s time to move onto her funny little brother, the purl stitch.
Not all of our kits use the purl stitch but you should definitely learn it as it’ll pop up in lots of other patterns.

Why not have a look at some kits and GET KNITTING?
The purl stitch is a nice simple stitch to get to grips with. If you're not sure what to do, try getting started with some scrap yarn, casting on and then practice purling a few rows. As with most things, it might take a few goes to get right but if my Dad (otherwise known as Grandpa) can do it, then you can too. Just remember, like in the video, your yarn is at the front between your needles (not over the top of your needles!).
- For purling, remember you have the yarn at the front of your work. That means that you bring it forward (between the needles – not over them!) and keep it there for the duration of the purl stitches.
- Don’t pull too tight when you’re purling as it might make it hard to work the next row.
- Still not working? Check you have your yarn at the front of your work (in between your needles; to do a knit stitch you have your yarn at the back of your work and behind your needles).
- Once you’ve mastered the purl, you are ready to make pretty much any pattern in knitting – mix and match the purl with the knit stitch and you will be on fire! Go you.
